The Republic of Indonesia encourages a multilateral approach to global environmental issues

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Indonesia encourages the need for a multilateral approach to deal with various global environmental issues that have an impact on various countries at the G20 environment ministers meeting.

Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya at the G20 Joint Environment and Climate Ministers’ Meeting (JECMM) in Nusa Dua, Bali on Wednesday, highlighted that there is not a single country that is not affected by various global environmental issues and can solve them alone.

“Therefore we all have a responsibility to take care of environmental multilateralism to solve it. Environmental multilateralism is the only mechanism by which all countries, regardless of size and wealth, stand in the same position and have the same treatment,” she said before delegates of G20 member countries.

She said the existence of multilateralism in dealing with environmental issues would provide an opportunity for both developed and developing countries to have their voices heard.

For that reason, the G20 Presidency of Indonesia in the G20 environment ministers meeting also invited several other parties, such as the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the African Union.

“Their concerns and interests are also important. All countries can contribute to the solution in one way or another,” she said.

A multilateral approach to environmental issues is also the only way to effectively coordinate measures to address global challenges.

She invited the G20 member countries and representatives of other organizations present to strengthen the spirit of mutual respect.

“Because multilateralism can only be achieved when there is trust between us. Because it is our responsibility to be part of the solution, we build bridges not walls and we promote common interests instead of individual interests,” said Siti. (mhn/bbs)
