Detik.com Exclusive Interview: Governor Herman Deru’s Strategy to Make South Sumatra Self-Sufficient in Food and Focus on Developing Superior Human Resources

Palembang, The Indonesia Post – The Governor of South Sumatra, H. Herman Deru (HD), dissected his grand vision and priority program achievements in an exclusive podcast with national media outlet Detik.com, hosted by veteran host Elvan. Griya Agung Palembang, Sunday (26/4/2026).

HD explained the transformation of South Sumatra through three main pillars: infrastructure development, strengthening food security, and developing Human Resources (HR) towards Golden Indonesia 2045.

One of the crucial points discussed was the activation of Posyandu in all corners of South Sumatra.

“Baby weight accuracy is a key indicator of nutritional status. With digital scales, we obtain precise data for nutritional interventions. The results are tangible, with the reduction in stunting rates in South Sumatra being one of the most significant in Indonesia,” HD emphasized.

As is known, the prevalence of stunting in South Sumatra has shown a significant decline, reaching 15.9% in 2024 from 24.8% in 2021.

Regarding economic resilience, the Governor emphasized the success of the South Sumatra Food Self-Sufficiency Movement (GSMP). This program has proven effective in shifting people’s mindsets from consumerism to productivity by utilizing their yards.

In the agricultural sector, South Sumatra Province, which was previously ranked 8th nationally, then rose to 5th place, and is now ranked 3rd nationally as the region with the highest rice production.

“We continue to accelerate rice field rejuvenation and optimize irrigation. We want to ensure that South Sumatra is not just a food barn, but a key pillar of national food sovereignty,” he added.

Looking to the future, HD stated that the biggest challenge today is preparing competitive human resources. The government’s primary focus is equipping productive-age children with adequate digital skills and literacy.

At the end of the podcast, host Elvan asked the Governor about his final hopes for the people of South Sumatra.
“I want the people of South Sumatra to be happy. The conditions are simple yet profound: their basic needs are met, they feel well served by the government, and they live in harmony,” he hoped. (mhn/ril)
