“Based on the letter (a letter from FIFA), thank God, Indonesian football is not sanctioned by FIFA,” President Jokowi said in an online press statement monitored in Jakarta, Friday night.

President Jokowi said that the letter was a follow-up to the telephone communication between him and FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Monday (3/10).

“FIFA together with the Government will form a transformation team for Indonesian football,” he said.

The chaos after the Arema FC versus Persebaya League 1 football match on Saturday (1/10) at the Kanjuruhan Stadium became the world’s spotlight because it caused the death toll to 131 people.

The Kanjuruhan tragedy occurred due to riots after the completion of the classic match between Arema Malang and Persebaya Surabaya which ended with a score of 2-3. A number of supporters entered the field and were answered loudly by security officers who fired tear gas into the stands.

According to the East Java Police Chief, Inspector General Pol. Nico Afinta, shortly after the incident, fired tear gas because the disgruntled supporters of the team nicknamed “Singo Edan” took to the field to act anarchically and endanger the safety of the players and officials.

Based on data from the Malang District Health Office, 131 people died as a result of the tragedy at Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang Regency, East Java, while 440 people suffered minor injuries and 29 seriously injured.

President Jokowi has formed an Independent Joint Fact-Finding Team (TGIPF) consisting of 13 people led by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD and accompanied by the Menpora as deputy chairman to investigate the Kanjuruhan Tragedy within 1 month.

The Indonesian Police have also named six suspects in the Kanjuruhan tragedy, three of whom are police personnel. The other three suspects were from the match organizers, namely the President Director of PT Liga Indonesia Baru, the Chair of the Arema FC Panpel, and security officers at the Kanjuruhan Stadium.
