Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Indonesian President Joko Widodo chaired a limited meeting at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday, to seek breakthrough steps regarding the eradication and handling of drugs in the country.
“This afternoon, I want to invite all of us to look for a leap, a breakthrough so that we can reduce this extraordinary crime (drugs) and solve it well,” said President Jokowi in his introduction during a limited meeting in Jakarta, Monday.
The President paid close attention to a number of drug-related issues, including the records of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) regarding drug abuse cases which have touched 1.95 percent of society or 3.6 million people.
This has also resulted in an excess number of residents in correctional institutions.
Apart from that, President Jokowi emphasized the need to initiate strict law enforcement so that it has a deterrent effect.
The Head of State also knows that many law enforcement officers are involved in drug abuse and asks that the officers involved be given strict legal action as well.
“This is a note and firm action must be taken against them,” stressed President Widodo.
Furthermore, regarding rehabilitation for drug users, the President said that there had been a proposal from the military commander that it could be carried out in Rindam and every regional military district which has a capacity of approximately 300 to 500 people.
“It can be rehabilitated there, but we will also discuss the budget later,” explained Joko Widodo.
Finally, regarding prevention, President Jokowi wants all relevant parties to properly handle the problem of drug smuggling.
“We are really taking care of the smuggling, the influx of drugs. I think this is for us to focus on, I want to decide later that we can do it, not in all provinces first, maybe in the top five provinces with the highest levels of drugs. We will focus there or the top ten “But we’ll decide later after we talk here,” he explained. (mhn/bbs)
