Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Indonesian Police Chief, Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, in his opening remarks at the 17th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC) in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara said that cooperation between ASEAN countries is the main key to eradicating transnational crime.
“Cooperation and coordinated efforts are the key to dealing with transnational crime as a common enemy,” Listyo Sigit Prabowo said at an AMMTC activity, Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, Monday.
In the midst of the current global situation, Sigit said countries in the ASEAN region were able to appear as centers of world economic growth in accordance with the theme of this year’s ASEAN chairmanship ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth.
He realizes that stability and security in the region are the keys to maintaining the positive growth trend that has been built.
However, there is a serious threat that needs to be watched out for in maintaining the stability and security of the country, namely transnational crimes which are very complex at this time.
As a response to this complexity, he explained that he had held a working group level meeting, the 23rd Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC), and other related meetings.
“We exchanged views on the latest transnational crime trends such as the misuse of technology in various criminal activities, transnational crime hot spots, new modus operandi developed to evade detection by law enforcement, and cooperation between different transnational crime groups,” he said.
He stated Indonesia’s and Polri’s commitment to increasing cooperation with various existing forums and mechanisms such as information exchange, technology utilization, capacity building, police-to-police, handling over, joint investigations, mutual legal assistance, and extradition.
The Indonesian police also evaluate existing regulations, frameworks, law enforcement capacity, and cooperation in order to be more effective and adaptive in dealing with developments in transnational crime.
The 17th AMMTC has been officially opened by President Joko Widodo online.
Sigit emphasized that the AMMTC meeting was a strategic forum for sharing views in determining strategies, policies and real efforts to tackle transnational crime in the region.
He said there had been a number of changes in the existing cooperation framework so as to optimize the effectiveness of tackling transnational crime, protect witnesses and victims of crime, and increase public awareness of the risks of transnational crime. (mhn/bbs)
