Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, recalled the presence of Indonesian President Soekarno when he inaugurated the Soekarno Monument in Morotai Regency, North Maluku.
“In 1957, President Soekarno came to Morotai to meet with the people in Morotai and at the same time inaugurate the Morotai State Junior High School,” Puan said in a statement in Jakarta, Tuesday.
Puan said this when delivering a speech at the Inauguration of the Soekarno Monument in Morotai, Tuesday.
The Soekarno monument is located in the education and sports center area, Morotai Study and Sport Center, which is a collaboration between the Ministry of PUPR and the Morotai Island Regency Government, which is located in front of the SDN Unggulan 1 Morotai Island.
Puan feels proud to be able to trace back her grandfather’s history and hopes that the Bung Karno Monument can be a reminder of the meaning of the presence of the proclaimer of Indonesian independence on Morotai Island.
“Now, 65 years later, I, as Bung Karno’s grandson, come to Morotai to meet the people of Morotai and inaugurate the Soekarno Monument here,” she said.
She explained the meaning of Soekarno’s presence to one of the northernmost islands in Indonesia, one of which was the confirmation that Morotai had been part of Mother Earth since Indonesia’s independence.
According to her, after Bung Karno came to Morotai, it confirmed the national commitment that Indonesia is one unit.
“That Indonesia is not just Java, not just Sumatra. That since the beginning of independence, Morotai has been part of Indonesia,” she said.
Puan assessed that the pride commitment needs to be maintained together and it is hoped that development in Morotai will continue for the welfare of the community.
According to her, the national commitment that needs to be maintained together is that the progress of Indonesia must also be felt by the people of Morotai.
“The development benefits that children in Java get, must be felt by children in Morotai,” she said.
Puan emphasized that children in Morotai should have the opportunity to get education and good nutrition, just as they do with children on the island of Java.
Therefore, according to him, along with the inauguration of the Soekarno Monument, the Smart Indonesia Program was also delivered, vaccinations for children, assistance for MSMEs, plant seeds, and early childhood education.
During the inauguration, Puan was accompanied by, among others, Deputy Chair of Commission X DPR RI Agustina Wilujeng Pramestuti, member of Commission I DPR RI Irine Yusiana Roba Putri, and Regent of Morotai Island Benny Laos. (ojn/bbs)
