Palembang, The Indonesia Post – The General Election Commission (KPU) of South Sumatra has proposed a budget of IDR 359 billion to the provincial government (Pemprov) for the upcoming 2024 General Elections (Pemilu). However, in its development, Commission I of the South Sumatra DPRD only temporarily approved the budget of Rp. 30 billion.
Chairman of Commission I Legislative Council (DPRD) of South Sumatra (Sumsel), Antoni Yuzar, said that his party ensured that in 2023 the South Sumatra KPU would get a grant from the South Sumatran Regional Budget of Rp. 30 billion.
“The Rp30 billion budget is used to prepare for the Simultaneous Election (PPS). And in 2024 there will be a further budget and the total for the province is IDR 359 billion. This year, for a number of preparations of Rp. 30 billion first, including operational costs, PPK costs, the rest of the PPS will be handed over to the city districts,” he said, Tuesday (2/8/2022).
Antoni said that the Rp359 billion budget was only a temporary agreement and needed to be followed up by the Governor of South Sumatra and the Regents/Mayors in South Sumatra so that the funds would not overlap.
“Because the province is budgeting, the district is budgeting for the general election and the 2024 simultaneous general election, so there must be good communication to agree on it, don’t blame each other, it turns out that the province is not ready, the district/city is not ready, therefore there needs to be an understanding, coordination and maybe it is the governor who facilitates such a meeting,” he explained.
According to him, if regencies/cities will be able to finance the elections themselves, then the burden on the South Sumatra Provincial Government will be smaller. “But the KPU’s desire is for the province to help pay for all KPPS costs, all PPK honorariums are financed by the province, except for PPS and all kinds of expenses are borne by districts and cities,” he said.
For now, continued Antoni, Commission I of the South Sumatra DPRD will first look at the South Sumatra KPU’s proposal regarding the ability of the South Sumatra Provincial Government.
“That’s just a discourse, just the KPU’s own agreement, the South Sumatra Provincial Government has not followed up on it, but we are discussing Rp30 billion for this year now. In essence, Commission I will approve temporarily and we will convey it, conduct consultations and coordination with the TAPD team and in Banggar later, but the remaining Rp229 billion needs an agreement between the Province and Regency/City,” he concluded.
