The First Lady hopes that inmates can live independently after leaving prison

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo (Jokowi) hopes that inmates who have left correctional institutions (lapas) can live independently by utilizing the skills acquired.

“Later, you can get out of here independently,” said Iriana Jokowi while visiting the Class II A Women’s Correctional Institution (Lapas) in Bandar Lampung, Lampung, Wednesday, as quoted from a press release from the Presidential Secretariat.

Iriana Jokowi together with members of the Solidarity Action Organization for the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet Era (OASE KIM) on Wednesday reviewed skills development activities for inmates at the Class II A Women’s Prison in Bandar Lampung, Lampung Province.

“Here we attend the prison, it turns out that the inmates are very happy that there is coaching, each of them can have skills,” said Iriana.

Meanwhile, Head of Field 3 OASE KIM Loemongga Kartasasmita hopes that by providing this guidance, inmates who have left prison will be able to have job opportunities with the skills they already have.

“Later on, we also hope that the residents, the assisted residents, will leave later. They can have opportunities or alternative jobs because the skills we convey can have better opportunities. When they leave here, they have an idea what they can do,” she said.

Furthermore, Loemongga said that the coaching activities carried out by OASE KIM had been carried out for three weeks by providing skills in handicrafts and culinary matters.

“We, from Field 3, represent the OASE of the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet, conducting training for three weeks until yesterday. So the coaching is in the culinary field, then they are also given some craft skills,” she said.

The skills provided to the assisted residents include skills in making tapis, a traditional thread embroidery craft from Lampung. Loemongga said that the assisted residents there were taught to make more modern filters.

“Knowledge and methods are given to be able to make more modern filters so that they can be more competitive and can become provisions for the inmates when they leave this prison,” she explained. (mhn/bbs)
