Coordinating Minister emphasizes disaster risk mitigation for sustainable development

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto emphasized the importance of disaster risk mitigation and reduction in an effort to achieve disaster resilience and sustainable development.

One of these was realized through the 7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) meeting themed Fostering Collaboration towards Sustainable Resilience with Indonesia as the host from 23-28 May 2022 in Bali.

“Indonesia has a valuable opportunity in creating a better world through mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR),” he said in an official statement in Jakarta, Tuesday.

The 2022 GPDRR meeting aims to improve DRR through communication between stakeholders to share experiences in formulating strategic guidelines for implementing the global framework for DRR or the Sendai Framework for DRR 2015-2030.

The Coordinating Ministry for the Economy also played a role as a leader in Thematic Session 10 themed Building Resilience Through Recovery which was prepared in advance through the implementation of the GPDRR Consultation Forum on 11-12 May 2022 in Jakarta.

Assistant Deputy for Disaster Resilience and Utilization of Technology Muksin said the threat of disasters is increasing due to climate change and pandemics.

Therefore, it is necessary to raise awareness and collaboration between countries in facing the threat of future disasters, including the strategy of putting planning documents into real action.

In Indonesia itself, disasters have an impact on three major groups, namely the government, business actors and the community.

Not only that, every disaster event, especially catastrophic in nature, also has a major impact on fiscal resilience and public services.

However, Indonesia already has a disaster financing regulation through Presidential Regulation Number 75 of 2021 concerning the Joint Fund for Disaster Management.

“The pooling fund scheme can be one of the achievements that needs to be addressed in the GPDRR as an effort to restore the government’s fiscal capacity,” said Muksin.

Another strategy is the existence of a business continuity management system for business actors as well as area-based disaster strategies such as the Disaster Resilient Village (Destana) program.

“This is expected to be scaled up to a city scale to support a resilient city based on spatial plan,” he said. (ojn/bbs)
