Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Indonesian President Joko Widodo in his introduction to the plenary session of the cabinet at the State Palace, Jakarta, Tuesday (11/10), asked his staff to anticipate and calculate potential natural disasters due to extreme weather in the country.
“Anticipation of potential natural disasters due to extreme weather must also be calculated. Heat waves in Europe, flash floods in Pakistan, hurricanes in Florida, long droughts in Africa, in Kenya, I think we’ll see all of that should be our evaluation material,” the President said in a plenary cabinet meeting, as shown on the Presidential Secretariat’s Youtube account at Jakarta, Wednesday.
He warned that Indonesia should not be prepared to mitigate disasters caused by extreme weather.
Jokowi admitted that he had ordered the Minister of PUPR to prepare pump points that must be built in anticipation of a dry heat wave.
“What I’m afraid of is that we’ve had almost three years of wet season. Long wet season. What I fear is that there will also be a long dry season,” he said.
He said that if the reservoirs or water reservoirs have been expanded and pumps in the villages can be prepared quickly, the drought is expected to be anticipated.
“Once again, disaster mitigation preparations. I think that’s what I want to say,” he said. (mhn/bbs)
