‘Business’ Hitted by Covid-19, Seven Pimps Turn to Online Prostitution 

Jakarta, TheIndonesiaPost – Seven people suspected of being pimps were secured by the Surabaya City Police (Polrestabes) on Friday (5/15). They were secured together with a number of women commercial sex workers (CSWs).

Head of Jatanras Satreskrim Polrestabes Surabaya, Iptu Agung Kurnia Putra said seven pimps and sex workers were secured because they were found to provide sex services through the MiChat messaging application.

“That’s right, so an online prostitution raid in Surabaya. The seven women (PSK) and seven pimps were secured,” Agung was quoted as saying by CNNIndonesia.com.

The seven pimps are known to come from Bandung, West Java. They are Edwin Mariyanto (21), Selvia Andriani (21), Edi Wiyono (21), Akmal Muyassar (19), Diah Nur Aini (24), M. Rizky (21) and Azis Haryanto (27).

In peddling the action, pimps upload status via MiChat which can be connected to the surrounding area within a certain distance radius.

After connecting, the pimps and prospective customers will negotiate and transaction in the application. Then they met at a hotel in the Surabaya Gubeng area.

Not only through MiChat, Agung said the suspects also claimed to often sell prostitutes through social media Twitter, and one other application.

“It’s on MiChat, BeeTalk, yes. Then there are some who use Twitter. Only three of them,” he said.

The matter of relative tariffs is not too expensive, starting from IDR 150 thousand to IDR 800 thousand per date with prostitutes. Within a day they can receive 6-7 times the request.

From that rate, pimps will take a 30 percent profit. But for a more expensive nominal of Rp. 800 thousand, pimps will reap a half profit from the prostitutes.

Based on the information, the pimps claimed they were forced to do the action in Surabaya. The reason is currently spreading coronavirus or Covid-19, their income in Bandung has decreased.

“From their confession, they are not afraid of Covid-19. They are even more afraid of not being able to eat, so they are forced to do this work,” he said.

For their actions, the pimps are now being charged with article 2 of RI Law No.21 of 2007 concerning Eradication of Trafficking in Persons, and or Article 296 of the Criminal Code and or Article 506 of the Criminal Code.

As for the CSWs who were also secured, all have now been repatriated. They were only questioned as victim-witnesses in this online prostitution case. (ojan/bbs)
