Minister of Manpower: Labor social security protects the informal sector

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – The Minister of Manpower (Menaker) Ida Fauziyah hopes that the workers’ social security program (Jamsostek) can protect informal sector workers, including culinary entrepreneurs.

“In providing protection for workers, the workers’ social security program is a means of protection that is present to accompany workers, from starting work until old age,” she said when receiving an audience with the Indonesian Culinary Entrepreneurs Association (APKULINDO) in Jakarta, Friday.

APKULINDO is a forum for culinary entrepreneurs that has been established since 2016, and has members of nearly 500 culinary entrepreneurs throughout Indonesia.

She stated that the mandatory social security protection for workers in the informal sector is work accident insurance and death insurance which will provide health care benefits in the event of a work accident, and death benefit benefits, funeral expenses and when the worker dies.

“I want this social security protection to help ease the burden, especially the families of the informal workers themselves,” she said.

On that occasion, the Minister of Manpower said that culinary entrepreneurs are included as informal sector workers who are vulnerable to the risk of work accidents starting from preparation, during trading, and after finishing trading.

She added that the state has established a National Social Security System (SJSN) which aims to provide assurance of social protection and welfare for all Indonesian people.

In terms of protection for workers, he continued, the social security program for workers is a means of protection that accompanies workers, from the time they start working until old age arrives.

“Through this program, it is expected to prevent workers/laborers and their families from falling into a new poor family when experiencing economic shocks such as work accidents, permanent total disability, entering old age, retirement and death,” said Ida Fauziyah. (mhn/bbs)
