Indonesia-Malaysia sign MoU on placement and protection of Indonesian migrant workers

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – The Government of Indonesia through the Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah and the Government of Malaysia through the Minister of Human Resources Dato’ Seri Saravanan Murugan signed a memorandum of understanding on the placement and protection of Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia.

The signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was witnessed by President Joko Widodo, Prime Minister (PM) Malaysia Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yakob in the Credential Room, Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Friday.

“During this visit, we both witnessed the signing of the MoU regarding the placement and protection of Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia,” said President Joko Widodo as he was monitored virtually through the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube account, Friday.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) explained that the memorandum of understanding would, among other things, regulate the use of an integrated canal system or “one channel system” for all placement, monitoring, and return of Indonesian migrant workers.

According to the President, Indonesian migrant workers have contributed greatly to economic development in Malaysia.

“It is natural for them (migrant workers) to get maximum rights and protection from our two countries,” said Jokowi.

The President believes that the memorandum of understanding does not stop on paper, but that all relevant parties can carry it out well.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Prime Minister (PM) Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri said that as a neighboring country, Malaysia appreciates the contribution of Indonesian migrant workers to the economic development and life of the Malaysian people.

PM Sabri explained that the memorandum of understanding would ensure that all processes for the recruitment and protection of migrant workers or Indonesian domestic service (PDI) will be carried out comprehensively in accordance with the legislation in both countries.

“The single entry channel for PDI to Malaysia has been approved using only a single channel system or ‘one channel system’ to screen only employers who are eligible to pay PDI,” said PM Sabri.

He added that Malaysia had ratified the protocol at the meeting of the International Labor Organization (ILO) as a commitment to eradicate the issue of forced labor, including providing protection for Indonesian migrant workers. (ojn/bbs)
