Jokowi: The economy in Asmat will increase with Ewer Airport

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – RI President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said the economy of Asmat Regency, South Papua will get better and increase with the completion of the development of Ewer Airport which facilitates the connectivity of individuals and goods.

“We hope that with the completion of the Asmat Airport, Asmat will develop and progress and we hope that the economy in Asmat Regency in South Papua Province in general will get better and improve,” said President Jokowi, while inaugurating the Ewer Airport Terminal, in Asmat Regency, Papua South, Thursday, as witnessed live on the Presidential Secretariat Youtube.

Jokowi said that Ewer Airport was ready to be used to serve the transportation needs of the people in Asmat Regency. Jokowi emphasized that inter-regional connectivity, both provinces and islands, is very important to accelerate the movement of people and goods.

“It will open the isolation, it will speed up logistical shipments,” he said.

Currently, Jokowi said, there are two flights every week from Timika, Central Papua to Asmat, four flights from Kamur to Asmat, and four flights from Merauke, South Papua.

“This will open up Asmat tourism to increase,” he said.

Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi explained that Ewer Airport has a distinctive character and will also become one of the tourist destinations to South Papua. Budi Karya believes that Ewer Airport will revive the economy and facilitate community activities in Asmat.

“Passengers almost every day come and go to Ewer, both to Timika and to Merauke. We discussed with the governor and regent that this helps the community and we do have some input that we must do, God willing, we will do it,” said Budi. (mhn/bbs)
