Tanggerang, The Indonesia Post – The Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan said that concrete reinforcing steel (BJTB) products that did not meet the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) could threaten the sustainability of national steel producers.
“In this case (non-SNI BJTB) could affect PT Krakatau Steel, and it could go bankrupt,” said Zulkifli after inspecting the steel factory owned by PT Long Teng Iron and Steel in Pasar Kemis, Tangerang Regency, Thursday.
He said, currently the essential development of the construction and manufacturing industry in Indonesia is increasing along with massive infrastructure development. So that the steel industry will also play an important role in improving the quality of the construction industry itself.
However, he continued, if one of the elements of governance for the resilience and utilization of the steel industry is not appropriate. So it will affect the consumption and independence of the national steel industry.
“It’s a pity if other domestic industries have followed the provisions, but there is one industry that has not followed the provisions according to SNI,” he said.
He revealed, so far about 40 steel industries producing similar products are known not to meet SNI. For this reason, his party will immediately take firm action on this matter.
“I received a report that in Banten Province many domestic companies that produce BJTB violate the rules,” he said.
He revealed, for products that do not meet SNI, security is carried out as an initial preventive measure to minimize consumer losses in the aspects of safety, security, consumer health and the environment (K3L).
Because, according to him, trade in BJTB products must meet SNI quality requirements, business actors are prohibited from producing and or trading goods that do not comply with the provisions.
“Temporary security measures are implemented based on Article 40 of the Minister of Trade Regulation Number 69 of 2018 concerning Supervision of Circulating Goods and/or Services for further destruction,” he said.
Previously, the Ministry of Trade had destroyed concrete reinforcing steel (BJTB) products worth IDR 32.2 billion. This is because the 419,537 steel rods weighing 2,302 tons have violated the SNI quality requirements.
This non-SNI BJTB violates Article 8 paragraph (1) letter a Law Number 8/1999 concerning Consumer Protection with the threat of criminal sanctions under Article 62 paragraph (1) with a maximum imprisonment of five years or a maximum fine of IDR 2 billion. (mhn/bbs)
