Aceh, TheIndonesiaPost – Have you climbed an areca tree? For those who are not familiar do not try. The trunk is not too big but very high and usually, there is a moss that binds the areca nut stem, of course, this is one of the reasons why not everyone is able to ride it.
But not for Siti Hajar. This 35-year-old woman is an expert. She was used to climbing areca since she was a child.
Siti Hajar lives in the interior of Paroh Mampree Village, Peusangan Siblah Krueng District. Exactly about 26 kilos Or need a road trip of at least one hour from the Capital City of Juang, Bireun Regency, Aceh Province.
She lives in a small house aided by the Village Fund. The house she had recently occupied. Previously her house was only rattan walls and thatched roofs.
In that house, she lived with her two children. There is also an older brother and her mother live in that house. “If there are a mattress and TV I am very grateful,” she hoped as quoted by BBCIndonesia.
In one day, Siti can climb 60 areca trees with a wage of Rp2,000 per tree. The trees are very tall and there are dozens of meters high. She must risk her life to climb the trees. Siti climbed only with the help of cloth to tie her legs and a machete.
Siti actually had stopped being an arbor climber. But since the departure of her husband about eight years ago, Siti had to work hard again.
Unfortunately, climbing areca nuts can only be done during the areca season. The rest, Siti must rack her brain to meet family needs. The rest she worked picking beans in people’s heads.
Wages obtained from climbing areca nuts are usually used to meet daily needs. Such as rice, sugar, coffee including for school fees and children’s snacks.
“There was someone who helped my first child to enter the pesantren. For the second child, wants to go to school and study; Muslim pray at the village, ”she said (mhn / bbs)
