Jayapura, The Indonesia Post – The Head of the Papua Regional Police Inspector General of Police Mathius Fakhiri said that as many as 19 suspected provocateurs were secured by the Jayapura City Police and Jayapura Police in a commotion incident during the arrest of Governor Lukas Enembe.
Of the 19 people arrested since Tuesday (10/1), one person died at Yowari Hospital and 18 others are still being investigated by investigators.
“They were arrested for carrying out attacks on members and provoking other supporters, both around the Headquarters of Mobile Brigade Kotaraja, Jayapura City and in Sentani,” said Kapolda Faakhiri in a virtual press conference from Timika, Wednesday.
The regional police chief explained that investigators were still conducting investigations at two places according to the location of the incident, each at the Jayapura City Police where two people were recorded as having attacked members, including throwing stones, and dozens of people were at the Jayapura Police area in Sentani.
There were several incidents during the arrest of Governor Lukas Enembe by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Tuesday (10/1), both at the Headquarters of Mobile Brigade Kotaraja and in the Sentani Airport area.
Of the 19 people who were arrested, one person died while being treated at the hospital due to a gunshot wound and 16 people were injured. Those who were injured have been treated medically.
“I’m still waiting for a complete report because someone died. That’s why I ordered the Head of Propam to investigate whether the handling was according to procedure or not. If not, it will be followed up according to applicable law,” said Kapolda Faakhiri.
The Regional Police Chief asked the people of Papua to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that were not true. “Let’s protect Papua together so that it becomes a land of peace,” he said.
On Tuesday (10/1), the KPK arrested the Governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe, who had previously been named a suspect in the alleged bribery and gratuity case. After being arrested, Lukas Enembe was immediately flown to Jakarta from Sentani Airport with a transit in Manado. (mhn/bbs)
