The Sumatran tiger population in Jambi is estimated to be more than 183 individuals

Jambi, The Indonesia Post – The Jambi Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) noted that the population of Sumatran tigers (Phantera Tigris Sumatrae) living in national parks in Jambi Province is estimated to be around 183 individuals.

The head of the Jambi BKSDA, Rahmad Saleh in Jambi on Saturday, said that most of the 183 Sumatran tigers live in the Kerinci Seblat National Park (TNKS) which has a land area of 1,385 hectares, of which 32 percent are in Jambi Province while the rest are in three other provinces in Sumatra.

There are approximately 150 Sumatran tigers living in TNKS, of which the most are in Jambi, then in Berbak Sembilang National Park (TNBS) there are approximately 25 more and on PT Reki’s land there are only eight.

“Those who have not been recorded by the BKSDA are tigers in the Bukit Tigapuluh National Park, but if there is it will increase the number of tiger populations in Jambi Province,” said Rahmad Saleh.

The last case of conflict between tigers and humans occurred in Jambi Province, namely in Merangin Regency. There BKSDA managed to secure a male tiger aged 8-10 years.

The Sumatran tiger was caught in a trap set by the Jambi BKSDA and the male tiger weighing 110 kg is now in very good health and will be released soon.

The Sumatran tiger was caught in a box trap in Nalo Gedang Village, Merangin Regency, Jambi.

“For the release of the male tiger, which is estimated to be 10 years old, the Jambi BKSDA is still waiting for the central decision,” said Rahmad Saleh.

Physically the male tiger is in very good condition and healthy, so it is ready to be returned to its natural state.

The Jambi KSDA Office has rescued Sumatran tigers in Merangin Regency thanks to information on the appearance of tigers in Nalo Gedang Village and its surroundings, Nalo Tantan Subdistrict, which has begun to be received in 2021 and when the information was verified some time later the tiger was suspected to have returned to the surrounding forest.
