Airlangga: Indonesia’s G20 presidency pushes for equal distribution of vaccines

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said that the G20 Presidency of Indonesia encouraged the even distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine, especially to developing countries.

“Indonesia’s proposal is that we want to create a funding mechanism that supports the availability of vaccines and medicines for countries in need,” Airlangga said in the Indonesian Pavilion webinar at the Davos World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting, which was monitored online, Monday.

The global health architecture is one of the main issues discussed at the G20 Indonesia Presidency considering that the COVID-19 pandemic has not really ended.

Furthermore, digital transformation is also a theme discussed in Indonesia’s G20 Presidency considering that digitalization has contributed to the economies of G20 countries during the two years of the pandemic.

“Within Asia itself, it is projected that the Asian economy will earn US$300 billion from digitization,” he said.

However, many countries face challenges in carrying out digital transformation in the form of infrastructure development which will be discussed at the G20 meeting.

The last theme discussed was related to the transition of energy to new and renewable energy (EBT), including its financing.

“Indonesia is committed to 2050 at least 30 percent of the energy used is new and renewable energy (EBT),” he said.

He added that President Jokowi was also appointed by the Director General of the United Nations (UN) to be part of a group that will discuss energy transitions, food availability and security, and funding for developing countries that are currently struggling to repay debt.

“During this pandemic most countries are using leveraged loans to finance social support programs and necessary debt restructuring,” he said. (ojn/bbs)
