Chico becomes the first Papuan son to win the Super 500 Malaysia Masters

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Men’s singles badminton player Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo made a new history in his career by winning the 2022 Malaysia Masters, as well as becoming the first Papuan athlete to win the BWF Super 500 event.

The 45th-ranked badminton player defeated eighth seed Ng Ka Long Angus in two straight games 22-20, 21-15 in the final which took place at Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur, Sunday.

The first game started off excitingly, where both badminton players had the ambition to steal the advantage through aggressive play in the front sector.

In the game which lasted for 25 minutes, Chico applied a more patient game and patiently played rallies. Meanwhile, Ka Long chose to play drive and netting to force Chico to exhaust his strength.

This netting game proved effective enough to outsmart the strategy presented by Chico, so that several times the Hong Kong representatives were able to gain points.

Even so, Chico still holds a 9-4 advantage in the early half. In the second half, the score difference was getting thinner thanks to Ka Long’s more intensive netting game. Even Chico was overtaken 15-17 from his opponent.

Chico’s chance to overtake occurred in the first point game. Even though the score was tied at 20-20, Chico’s position was saved thanks to two additional points obtained from the smash and the return of Ka Long’s error.

Chico’s action continued in the second game, but this time he and Ka Long both played hard and often threw sms at each other to apply pressure.

Chico’s game is getting more mature, he is not in a hurry to kill the opponent and is able to predict the direction the ball will go out of the field so he just lets it go. In addition, Chico’s defense also deserves thumbs up.

Ka Long’s loud smash was also repeatedly repelled by Chico’s wide range. Had been overtaken 9-10, Chico corrected the position of the score to 15-10.

Chico’s position had the upper hand by creating a difference of eight points 20-12, but his impatience to finish the match cost him three points.

At a score of 20-15, the two players competed fiercely with each other until a netting match ensued. Ka Long actually had the opportunity to add one point through a luck ball that touched the net, but Chico was amazingly able to return it.

Ka Long, who was ready to be in front of the net, then took the initiative to return by netting but crossed. Luckily this return failed and eventually contributed one point to decide the title for Chico. (ojn/bbs)
