Herman Deru doesn’t want farmers to become laborers on his own land

Palembang, The Indonesia Post – Starting his work agenda Tuesday (27/10/20) morning, the Governor of South Sumatra H. Herman Deru confirmed the management of the Regional Research Council (DRD) of South Sumatra for the 2020-2022 period at Graha Bina Praja (Auditorium) of the South Sumatra Provincial Government. Shortly after the inauguration, Herman Deru also challenged the newly appointed DRD board to increase agricultural productivity in South Sumatra.

According to HD, the agricultural potential in South Sumatra is very large, but unfortunately, the welfare of farmers still needs attention. Not wanting the farmers to become laborers on their own land, HD argues that the only urgent way to do this is to increase the productivity of agricultural products from below 5 tons to an average of 6 tons per hectare.

“We can’t allow farmers to move on their own. I often do calculations, they are still working on their own land with an income of Rp. 80,000-Rp. 100,000. That’s why I challenge ladies and gentlemen (Regional Research Council) to fix the mindset of farmers as well. what innovations can be done at Alsintan, “explained HD.

So far, said HD, agricultural equipment tends to be very expensive, reaching hundreds of millions, making it difficult for farmers to reach. Through agricultural tool innovation, it is hoped that there will be alternative tools that farmers can use to increase their production.

“Of course I need assistance from experts. So that all these policies can be hit, effective and efficient. Everything is still possible to improve and this must be a comprehensive thinking. We cannot move partially,” he explained.

According to HD, the input and consideration of the research councils is very much needed, especially regarding policies that involve many people. He also hopes that each innovation continues its development progress so that it doesn’t become an echoing gong at the beginning.

“I invite them to make research or research on all existing problems, for example about how we improve food, culture, technology. That is the basis for leaders in making policies,” he added.

Most importantly, continued HD, the mental soul of an innovator should not only be a slogan because in fact innovation can be started from small and cheap things.

“I once proved it myself when I became Regent and even received an award in 2007. I received an award for being able to develop a region with low costs. All I involved, farmers, laborers, civil servants and most importantly the experts,” he explained.

In an effort to encourage the growth and development of innovation in the regions, the South Sumatra Provincial Government said Herman Deru carried it out comprehensively, starting from the most basic thing, namely forming an innovator’s mentality.

There were 4 main moves he revealed in the event, namely the 4S moves. First is that everyone is an innovator, secondly that every problem becomes an opportunity for innovation, the third is synergy in formulating solutions and every concrete innovation results.

Meanwhile, the Head of Balitbangda of South Sumatra Province, Dr. Ekowati Retnaningsih, explained that the Regional Research Council has the task and function of providing input to the South Sumatra Provincial Government through the Balitbangda of South Sumatra Province to formulate directions, priorities, and a regional government policy framework in the Science and Technology Sector.

Then as a warehouse of experts (brain trust) who play an active role in finding alternative solutions to science and technology problems faced by the Provincial Government.
