Provincial Government Receives Operational Support for Emergency Handling of Forest and Land Fires

Palembang, The Indonesia Post – The South Sumatra Provincial Government received operational support assistance for emergency management of smoke disasters caused by forest and land fires (karhutlah) from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) worth IDR. 4.5 M and assistance with equipment for handling forest and land fires in South Sumatra Province.

Assistance was provided by the Head of BNPB RI, Lieutenant TNI Suharyanto, S.Sos., MM., to the Governor of South Sumatra H Herman Deru while attending the Coordination Meeting (rakor) for Handling the Forest and Land and Forestry Disaster in South Sumatra.

HD hopes that this assistance will provide new enthusiasm for the South Sumatra task force and BPBD in tackling forest and land fires in South Sumatra. HD revealed that South Sumatra has several areas with extensive peatlands. And almost all of the land that was burned was abandoned peatland.

“From year to year, we are always alert. In the city there is also a giant screen that informs us of the level of air pollution. From before and today, the smoke is still fluctuating and is still categorized as under control,” he said.

Furthermore, HD hopes that efforts to deal with forest and land fires will continue to be optimized towards prevention. And at existing fires, we are also trying to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible by land and air with support from all parties.

Head of BNPB RI, Lieutenant TNI Suharyanto, S.Sos., MM., said that he and HD had reviewed forest and land fires from the air and land. Especially in South Sumatra, there are already burning areas and many of them have been extinguished. And some points are difficult to extinguish because the location is remote.

“Water booming readiness is the highest in South Sumatra. And also with help from other areas, TMC will also be maximized from BMKG. Especially for quite extensive fires in OKI district. I’m sure it can be extinguished. I’m sure it can be controlled,” he said.

“All provinces have been reviewed one by one. I assure you that today’s conditions are not the same. However, we must make efforts to ensure that the forest and land fires remain under control during the El Nino period,” he concluded. (mhn/ril)
