Puan Maharani: Domestic Violence Is Not a Disgrace, Women Must Be Able to Defend

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – The Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, assessed that domestic violence (KDRT) was something that absolutely should not be justified for any reason. Therefore, the normalization of all forms of domestic violence should not occur.

“Domestic violence cannot be justified at all. The name is domestic violence, it’s still domestic violence, whatever the reasons behind it. Therefore, I invite all parties, especially women, as parties who often become victims, not to normalize domestic violence in the slightest,” said Puan in a written statement, Friday (4/2/2022).

The first woman who served as Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives said that Indonesia was already in a state of domestic violence emergency. Puan said that there were many cases of domestic violence which were not processed further because the victims were afraid or embarrassed.

“I can understand feelings like that. But keep in mind, domestic violence is not a disgrace. As women, we must be able to defend our rights and maintain honor as equal human beings,” added Puan.

Puan said that the issue of domestic violence should not be considered as a normal and normal thing because it can have an impact on illness and even physical and psychological trauma.

“So for the victims of domestic violence, never be afraid to ask for help when experiencing violence from their partner,” she said.

Puan reminded that Indonesia already has Law Number 23 of 2004 concerning the Elimination of Domestic Violence which was passed in the era of the 5th President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

“The legal umbrella created in the era of the leadership of Indonesia’s first female president, must be a protector for women or mothers in the country from the threat of domestic violence, and also as a means of struggle to seek justice,” explained Puan.

Therefore, the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture invites Indonesian women who are victims or see domestic violence experienced by others not to remain silent.

“Listen and support the victims by appreciating their courage to reveal what they have experienced before the law, so that Indonesia is free from cases of domestic violence,” added Puan. (mhn/bbs)
