Palembang, The Indonesia Post – South Sumatra Governor H Herman Deru received an award as the Pioneer of the South Sumatra Food Independent Movement (GSMP) from the South Sumatra Tribune.
The award was received by HD at the Millennial Group Workshop with the theme “1001 Stories from Sriwijaya Earth for Indonesia Towards a Food-Independent South Sumatra” organized by the Sumsel Tribune.
GSMP is a movement to change people’s mindset from consumptive to productive. However, changing the mindset is not enough, but it takes the role of all parties, especially the government.
The government’s task is to guide farmers to become bankable, entrepreneurial, understand science and technology and understand the market. Farmers should be assisted with quick and easy information.
“We really need deep-rooted institutions such as the mass media, such as tribunes to help the government and farmers socialize GSMP. GSMP benefits not only farmers but also all South Sumatran people. Although it has only been effective for 7 months, the benefits have been felt by the community, especially in urban areas,” he said.
HD invites all parties to do GSMP. However, according to him, there must be uniformity of commodities, it should not be sporadic, there should be zones in the form of clusters per food commodity which are fostered by each district/city agriculture office.
“I hope that what has been done by the regent and mayor in regional food innovation continues to be developed and remains consistent. We must admit that many traditional farmers do not want to innovate, but I appreciate several districts that have innovated in agriculture,” he said.
Besides that, HD invites the community to use their house yards for farming at least to meet their own household needs. Even if it is necessary, HD provides opportunities for the community to use the vacant lands belonging to the South Sumatra Provincial Government for farming, the important thing is that the objectives of farming and marketing targets are clear.
