Palembang, The Indonesia Post – South Sumatra Governor Dr. H. Herman Deru, MM has received national recognition for his strong commitment to tackling forest and land fires (Karhutla) in the province.
This time, the praise came directly from Indonesia’s Minister of Environment, Dr. Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, while leading the 2025 South Sumatra Provincial Forest and Land Fire Control Ceremony and Simulation at Griya Agung Courtyard, Palembang, on Tuesday (July 29, 2025).
In his address, Dr. Hanif Faisol Nurofiq expressed pride over the significant decline in forest and land fire cases in South Sumatra compared to several other provinces. He stated that this achievement was clear evidence of the hard work of the provincial government under Governor Herman Deru’s leadership in maintaining peatland ecosystem stability and preventing fires.
“We are very proud. South Sumatra has recorded a significant decrease in Karhutla cases compared to other regions. This is the result of joint efforts to maintain stable peat water levels. Fires can only occur when there is an element of intent,” Hanif stressed.
He further emphasized the importance of law enforcement against parties proven negligent or deliberately causing Karhutla, including land concession holders.
“We urge military, police, and local authorities—such as Pangdam II Sriwijaya, the South Sumatra Police Chief, and Forkopimda—to take firm legal action without hesitation. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry fully supports enforcement against those responsible,” he added.
