Palembang, Berita Rakyat Sumatera – South Sumatra Governor Herman Deru condemned the recent threat against a doctor at Sekayu Regional Hospital (RSUD Sekayu) in Musi Banyuasin Regency, calling the incident unacceptable as it undermines the dedication of healthcare workers.
Deru stressed that although both parties have reconciled personally, the legal process must still proceed. “On a personal level, forgiveness is fine, but legally the process must continue,” he said in Palembang on Monday (August 18).
According to him, the case sets a bad precedent for healthcare professionals, especially specialist doctors who are willing to serve in remote areas. “Healthcare workers must be respected. Why are there still such improper treatments?” he emphasized.
The governor also confirmed that the South Sumatra Health Office has deployed a team to Musi Banyuasin to follow up on the case. “Yes, we have already sent the Health Office team to Muba,” he noted.
The incident began when a patient’s family member forced Dr. Syahpri to remove his mask while examining a patient in the VIP ICU room at Sekayu Hospital. However, Dr. Syahpri explained that such an action violated health protocols and even posed a risk to his own safety as a medical worker. (mhn/bbs)
