President Jokowi: Inequality in digital access in the world must be corrected

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that G20 member countries and regions need to improve the inequality of access and digital infrastructure of countries in the world by mobilizing investment into the sector.

“This inequality must be corrected immediately. The G20 must be able to mobilize investment to be able to build digital infrastructure that is affordable for all,” said President Jokowi in session III of the G20 Indonesia Summit at The Apurva Kempinski Bali, Nusa Dua, Bali, Wednesday.

The President emphasized the importance of equal digital access in the world as the first of three focuses in digital transformation to accelerate global economic recovery.

According to the President, as many as 2.9 billion people in the world are not connected to the internet, which includes 73 percent of the population of least developed countries. In addition, the President said, as many as 390 million people in the world still live in areas without wireless internet.

“Digital infrastructure is also not evenly distributed,” said President Jokowi.

The second focus conveyed by President Jokowi was digital literacy. Digital literacy or understanding of digital, said the President, is not an option, but a necessity.

Digital literacy, said the President, must reach all parties so that they can participate inclusively in future economic development.

“The G20 must be able to mobilize cooperation to strengthen digital capacity for developing countries,” he said.

In the third focus, President Jokowi conveyed the importance of a safe digital environment or ecosystem. According to the President, hoaxes and cyberbullying will only break unity and threaten democracy.

“Data leaks due to cybercrimes have the potential to cause economic losses of up to five trillion US dollars by 2024. For this reason, digital security and privacy protection must be guaranteed,” he said.

The Head of State said the G20 must be able to build trust in the digital sector, including through global digital governance.

“Your Excellency, we must work together to ensure the benefits of digital can be felt equally by all. I invite contributions that start for a digital future that is safe, inclusive, and beneficial for all,” said President Jokowi.

The digital economy accounts for 15.5 of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). President Jokowi said that the digital economy is also the future of the world. (mhn/bbs)
