VP Amin encourages Eid al-Fitr celebration in simplicity

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Vice President Ma’ruf Amin encouraged people to celebrate Eid al-Fitr in simplicity and humility and not engage in show-off behaviour that can potentially hurt others.

“(We hope) officials or citizens will not ruin the joy of Eid al-Fitr with undesirable show-off behaviour that can hurt others. Despite (we are) encouraged to wear good attires (during Eid), the simple one is the best attire. I encourage all people to be modest,” Amin stated, according to the Vice Presidential Secretariat statement received here on Sunday.

At an interview with private media Kompas TV on Saturday (April 22) evening, the vice president pointed out that Ali ibn Abi Talib, the fourth Caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate, had said Muslims should not speak about their wealth before others nor speak about what they have before those who do not have it.

“(Show-off behaviour) will hurt those who do not have what we are having. Hence, do not show off our wealth before those struggling financially,” Amin said.

Meanwhile, he said that in the wealth of every Muslim, there is a portion that a Muslim is not rightful for, which must be distributed for the public good.

Hence, people must help and support each other to ensure all can taste joy and happiness during the Eid al-Fitr, the vice president said.

“We can amass our wealth, and Allah might bestow a fortune on us. However, we must not show it off, be humble. Instead, we must share a portion of what we own with people around us. As Prophet Muhammad conveyed, whoever has more in the celebration, must share it with their neighbours,” Amin remarked. (mhn/bbs)
