Governor Deru Credits Kiai Marogan Islamic Boarding School for Inspiring South Sumatra’s Tahfidz Movement

Palembang, The Indonesia Post – South Sumatra Governor Herman Deru revealed that the rapid development of Rumah Tahfidz (Qur’an memorization houses) across the province was originally inspired by the pioneering role of Pondok Pesantren (Ponpes) Tahfidz Kiai Marogan. He shared this during the pesantren’s 15th Anniversary celebration on Saturday (July 19, 2025), at Marogan Paradise, Talang Betutu, Sukarami District, Palembang.

Governor Deru said he has long had a personal and emotional connection with Ponpes Kiai Marogan, led by KH. Masagus A. Fauzan Yayan. He praised the pesantren’s vital role in shaping a Qur’anic generation of knowledge and character.

“KH. Masagus A. Fauzan Yayan has been my inspiration. Even before becoming Governor, I was determined to start the Rumah Tahfidz movement. We first tried it at Bukit Siguntang,” he said.

Today, Rumah Tahfidz centers have spread widely across South Sumatra’s districts and cities, becoming an essential part of the province’s human resource development strategy—focusing not only on intellectual excellence but also on moral integrity.

“Development should not only be about physical infrastructure. Non-physical development, especially in morals and character, is equally important. Ponpes Kiai Marogan has long proven its major role in this area,” Deru emphasized.

He further noted that in an era of rapid technological advancement and Artificial Intelligence (AI), strengthening the character of the younger generation is critical so they remain not only intellectually capable but also morally grounded.

“Technology is advancing incredibly fast, but without morals it can be a threat. Our human resources must be intelligent and ethical,” he warned.

During the event, Governor Deru also awarded tuition scholarships (Uang Kuliah Tunggal – UKT) to five students from the Faculty of Tarbiyah, Universitas PTIQ Jakarta in South Sumatra. The scholarships, dedicated in the name of the late Hj. Percha Leanpuri, will cover their education for up to eight semesters.

Meanwhile, KH. Masagus A. Fauzan Yayan expressed gratitude for the Governor’s ongoing support and hoped that infrastructure around Ponpes Kiai Marogan would continue to improve, allowing the pesantren to extend its benefits more widely to the community.
