Overcoming Floods in Palembang, South Sumatra Legislative Council Asks City Government to Expand Retention Pools

Palembang, The Indonesia Post – The chairman of the legislative Council (DPRD) for the Province of South Sumatra (Sumsel) Anita Noeringhati advised the Palembang City Government (Pemkot) to increase the retention pond in an effort to deal with flooding.

“This flood in the capital city of South Sumatra Province occurred because the Musi River cannot accommodate rainwater because it is currently at high tide,” said Anita, Tuesday (18/1/2022).

According to her, the retention pond can at least temporarily accommodate when rain water with high discharge occurs.

Previously, a number of residential areas and several protocol roads in Palembang were again submerged by floods as high as 50 centimeters.

This was caused by the phenomenon of heavy rain that lasted several hours on Monday (17/1/2021) from noon to late afternoon.

The heavy rain in Palembang which lasted for about three hours caused drainage, retention ponds and tributaries of the Musi River to overflow and inundate or inundate several residential areas and protocol roads.

Residential areas that were flooded, including Sekip, Demang Lebar Daun, Force 66, Jalan Simanjuntak and Dwikora.

Meanwhile, several protocol roads that were inundated include Soekarno-Hatta Street, Basuki Rahmad, R Sukamto, and Mayor Ruslan Street.

Floods also hit Palembang on December 25, 2021, so that it had paralyzed residents’ activities.

Anita said that the flooding was caused by the high rainfall which was influenced by the season.

On the other hand, when it rains, the Musi River’s water level is high due to high tides.

In the future, the South Sumatra DPRD hopes that the Palembang City Government will produce new breakthroughs so that the flood problem can be resolved immediately.

In addition, Anita also reminded the Palembang City Government to pay attention to adding water catchment areas to maintaining green open spaces (RTH) and overseeing land conversion.

The Mayor of Palembang Harnojoyo said that he strongly agreed with the proposal from the South Sumatra DPRD such as adding a retention pool.

“Every year, there are always additional retention ponds. In the future, how can this be maximized again,” said Harnojoyo.

According to him, Palembang residents must understand the topographical conditions of this area which is the ilir of the Musi River.

For this reason, residents are also asked not to throw garbage in the river and ensure that any flow of water is not blocked. (mhn/ril)
