Vice President: Higher Education Must Be Able to Increase Competitiveness

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Vice President Ma’ruf Amin asked for the role of higher education institutions to increase competitiveness. According to the Vice President, in the current era of globalization competition, it requires the Indonesian people to have independence and be competitive.

“We must have high competitiveness and be able to win access to various opportunities created by globalization. In this case, higher education institutions have a very significant role,” said the Vice President when delivering a scientific oration at the Virtual Graduation of the Vocational and Undergraduate Program at the University of Indonesia. (UI) 2022, Saturday (26/2).

The vice president said that apart from preparing individual human capital, higher education also has an important role in the prosperity of the people of a country. This is because higher education is linked to economic growth and the quality of human resources.

“Because higher education is a determining factor for long-term economic growth, technological progress, and increased practical skills,” he said.

The Vice President also said that the digital revolution has changed all sectors of life, including public services, banking, health, and transportation. For this reason, universities must be able to adapt and create various innovations to accelerate economic development.

“Universities must be able to become a locomotive of innovation, as a catalyst for future economic development, and act as an accelerator in the creation of new discoveries involving various scientific disciplines,” he said.

On the same occasion, Kiai Ma’ruf also said that higher education must be able to prepare human resources who are capable and ready to participate and master problem solving skills for various challenges faced by each generation, one of which is entrepreneurship.

Not only that, the Vice President also highlighted the importance of the nation’s character in responding to changes in social relations, which were marked by increasing individualistic attitudes as a form of progress and the rapid flow of science and technology.

“(individualism) is not a reflection of the character of our nation. I hope that the graduates will continue to uphold national values, such as tolerance and mutual cooperation in future journeys,” he said.

Closing his scientific oration, the Vice President hoped that UI could continue to contribute to development and innovation, both at the national and global levels. On this occasion, the Vice President also expressed his appreciation for UI’s efforts in improving the quality of the nation’s human resources.

“To all UI leaders and teachers, I express my high appreciation for your dedication and endeavor to create an “Intelligent and Dignified Generation of Indonesia,” said Kiai Ma’ruf. (ojn/bbs)
