Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – The Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Syahrul Yasin Limpo inaugurated a nursery center or early maturing coconut nursery in Wonorejo Village, Tulis District, Batang Regency, Central Java, to support the development of superior seeds and accelerate national seed self-sufficiency.
“In the management of this plantation nursery center, we also carry out intensive collaboration with all stakeholders, both local governments, partner producers and banks, so that the existence of this nursery does not depend on state budget financing,” said Minister of Agriculture Syahrul in a statement received in Jakarta, Friday.
The development of a nursery center in Batang Regency was carried out through a plantation development area approach and agro-climate suitability for coconut plants and was able to accommodate up to 20 million seedlings.
The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) hopes that the existence of this strategic nursery center can facilitate access to the distribution of superior seeds for farmers so that they can reduce distribution costs and reduce seed damage due to long supply chains.
“Given that the demand for coconut seeds continues to increase, the target for coconut seed production must continue to be increased every year,” Director General of Plantations of the Ministry of Agriculture Andi Nur Alam Syah added.
Andi hopes that the early maturing coconut nursery center can produce seeds that are ready for distribution so that in the future they can build a Dwarf Coconut Mother Garden in the same location. Thus, the mother garden can provide the needs of coconut seeds at any time.
“After the provision of coconut seeds is well developed, and meets the needs in Java and Lampung, I hope that in the future the Batang Nursery Center can develop with the addition of other plantation commodity seeds,” he explained.
Apart from Batang, the inauguration of a nursery center was also carried out in Cianjur Regency, West Java, for coffee. Then in Bombana Regency, Southeast Sulawesi for the cashew commodity, and Batang Regency for the early maturing coconut commodity.
All of these nursery centers have been built and equipped with adequate facilities and infrastructure such as machines and other technologies. (mhn/bbs)
